Simulation center receives ‘an edge’ in technology
PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College nursing students are working with new technology to place them one step ahead of the game when communicating patient information via whiteboards.
They are now training on the Scan Am MTR® Electronic Whiteboards, purchased through a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Nursing Innovations Grant. The system, installed in the San Jacinto College South Campus simulation center, includes six room boards, six precaution boards, and one main whiteboard. These boards automatically display nurse shift changes, records staff visits, the time and date, daily schedules, and hospital information and room number. They also allow nurses to customize patient information to be communicated, such as dietary needs, activities, health care provider notes, concerns and plans, and any additional information assigned to ensure patients’ needs are safely met.
"This gives our students an edge," said Becky Shuttlesworth, simulation coordinator at San Jacinto College. "We train our students on both the traditional method and on this latest technology. Not all hospitals will have this equipment, but we want to ensure our students are prepared for whichever system they work with as nurses."
Another benefit of the MTR® Electronic Whiteboards system is that other departments within a hospital can access the board information from their computers and already have the patient's information before performing a procedure or a test.
San Jacinto College is the first community college to obtain this technology for nursing students. The electronic boards eliminate the worry of outdated information. They were developed by the Scan Am Company in 2010.
"This software was developed by health care professionals," said Dan Sheldon, president and CEO of the Scan Am Company. "They became the key part of development in placing nursing students in an environment where they'll get the latest and greatest."
San Jacinto College offers nursing programs, with simulation centers, at the Central, North, and South Campuses. For more information, visit sanjac.edu/career/nursing.
