RN-to-BSN Program FAQs

• A new cohort of students will start each Fall and Spring semester

• 30-students in the Fall and 30-students in the Spring

• Apply to San Jacinto College through Apply Texas.
• The application for the program is on the BSN webpage.
• Complete an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS) from an accredited institution.
• Reflect a grade of C, or higher, in all previous nursing transfer courses.
• Hold an unencumbered, Texas RN licensure. Licensure must be valid throughout program completion.
• Be currently employed as a professional nurse (employment verification required).
• Cumulative GPA 2.5 on a 4.0 scale while in the program.
• Submit one recommendation letter from employer (supervisor) or former nursing faculty. 
• Pre-requisite courses completed, or in progress. 

• The program includes transfer credits from an accredited associate of applied science nursing program, general education courses, and upper level nursing courses.
  • Associate Degree Nursing: Transfer credit of 34 semester credit hours (SCH) will be applied to the RN-to-BSN degree
  • General Education Courses: 55 SCH is included in the degree; a list is at the end of the FAQ document
  • Upper-Level Nursing Courses: 31 SCH hours of BSN-level nursing courses

• The program is a blend of distance learning and classroom activities. 
• Most courses are taught in 8-week increments instead of a standard 16-week semester.

• Community Health Nursing is a 10-week course that includes a combination of classroom, online, and practical learning opportunities. Students will be required to travel to designated communities to complete the practical learning for this course and are required to maintain a log of activities throughout the course. Students will attend class the first week of the course to discuss the community assessment requirements and will present their findings to the class at the end of the semester. 
• The Research and Evidence-Based Nursing Practice and Leadership/Management courses are designed to analyze data to determine best practices. Clinical hours are not required for this course. Students will be required to develop a change management project. However, the student will not be required to implement the project. Students may select a topic suited for their places of employment. 

• One year of upper-level nursing courses. Students are encouraged to complete general education courses prior to entry into the program. 

• Costs are subject to change. 
• The approximate cost for the upper-level, RN-to-BSN program (nursing courses only) is:
  • In District Tuition: $2,418
  • Out-of-District Tuition: $4,185
  • Textbook Price: TBD 
  • Immunization and Drug Screen Tracking: TBD

• You may apply to the program with prerequisite courses in progress. However, your admissions rubric will not reflect the final grades for the courses and may hinder admission into the program.
• To promote successful completion of the upper-level nursing courses, students are encouraged to have all academic course work completed prior to entry into the program. Admission points are given for students who have completed the majority of academic courses at time of application to the program. 

• Competitive admission is based on rubric scores.

• Register with CastleBranch for immunization and documentation tracking;
• Provide proof of current immunization status;
• Provide proof of current American Heart Association Health Care Providers CPR (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Students must submit renewed card if the CPR certification expires during the program;
• Pass drug screen (coordinated by CastleBranch).
