Presenters: Steve Durham, Kirksey; Kimberly Hickson, Perkins and Will

Public and private clients are choosing Mass Timber for many reasons. Architects from Kirksey and Perkins and Will discuss timber projects now underway in the Texas Gulf Coast region: what the designers, builders, and owners have discovered as the pace of mass timber development in Texas increases.

9:30 AM Experiences of a Mass Timber Builder

Presenters: Rob Dodd and John Strack, Nabholz Construction

Frontline personnel from Nabholz Construction will discuss their experiences as an early mass timber implementer. This presentation will focus on lessons learned from the recently completed 200,000 GSF residence hall at the University of Arkansas.

Presenters: Susan Phillips, Tellepsen Builders; Joseph Gentile, Arup

Experts from Arup and Tellepsen Builders will address mass timber unique safety concerns: storage, staging, and erection considerations; including NFPA fire protection requirements during construction.

1:00 PM Essentials for Wood Construction in the 2015 IBC

Presenter: David Tyree, American Wood Council

Concise summary of IBC 2015 for commercial and multi-family residential construction using wood construction. Explains the determination of maximum building size; establishing fire resistance for wood assemblies and heavy timber; finishes, appendages, and other wood features.

3:15 PM Code Applications for Laminated Timbers

Presenters: Michelle Kam-Biron, American Wood Council

IBC compliant use of Nail-laminated Timber (NLT), Glued-laminated Timber (GLT) and Cross-laminated Timber (CLT) structural framing members. Whether selected for aesthetics or design flexibility, all offer superior structural performance, long- term durability, and rapid construction. Structural and fire protection characteristics will be discussed as well as IBC code provisions for a wide variety of occupancies.

Presenter: Michelle Kam-Biron, American Wood Council

Features techniques for designing wood member connections with AWC's 2015 National Design Specification ® (NDS®) for Wood Construction and Technical Report 12 - General Dowel Equations for Calculating Lateral Connection Values (TR12). Includes connection design philosophy and behavior, an overview of common fastener types, and TR12 design examples.

11:00 AM Fire-Resistance Design Primer for Mass Timber Construction

Presenters: David Tyree, American Wood Council

Examines how fire resistance ratings in the 2015 IBC apply to mass timber and heavy timber construction. Topics include: fire testing and calculation methods to quantify fire resistance, how materials behave when exposed to high fire temperatures. Mass timber fire resistance ratings when fully exposed or provided with some degree of noncombustible protection are addressed based on current and proposed future code provisions. Also included is information on fire testing and an overview of proposed changes in the 2021 IBC regarding tall mass timber buildings.

1:00 PM Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic: Overview and Changes

Presenter: Michelle Kam-Biron, American Wood Council

This presentation will discuss the AWC's 2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS). Participants will learn about the overall format of the SDPWS and how to apply design provisions to shear walls and diaphragms as well as changes from previous editions.
