Promise Scholarship Requirements

• Graduate from an in-district high school during the 2023-2024 academic school year.
• Most students will be graduating from one these in-district high schools:

• Portions of Clear Creek, Humble, and Pearland ISDs that are in the San Jac taxing district. Please check your address on the Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD) to confirm. 
• Private school and homeschool students with a high school graduation in the 2023-2024 academic school year, and who live in the SJC taxing district at the time of graduation are eligible.
• Students must have been enrolled at their in-district high school or, for private and home school students, have lived in the district by October 1, 2023.
• Students must meet all Promise deadlines:
  • February 22, 2024 – Complete the Promise Pledge and Apply to San Jacinto College
  • July 18, 2024 - Complete and submit a FAFSA or TASFA
  • July 18, 2024 – Complete all enrollment steps and register for fall classes
• Students must accept all gift aid for which they are eligible, including Pell and state grants. San Jacinto College must be the designated higher education institution on the FAFSA or TASFA application. Promise funding is awarded last-dollar, after all other grant funding is applied.
• Dual Credit students who have graduated from high school between December 1, 2023, and August 15, 2024, and who have not completed a degree at San Jac, may use Promise funds to complete their Associate Degree.
• Dual credit students who have graduated from high school between December 1, 2023, and August 15, 2024, and who have completed studies at San Jac with a certificate may use the scholarship to pursue an associate degree.
• There are no initial GPA or income requirements to be eligible for the scholarship.

• The scholarship begins in the Fall 2024 semester and students must be enrolled in classes at SJC for the Fall 2024 semester to be eligible.  Students who begin Spring 2025 or after are not eligible for the tuition scholarship.
• Students must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester. Students enrolled in college preparatory courses may enroll in a minimum of 11 credit hours.
• Exceptions to the mandatory credit hour requirement can be made in the student’s final semester or under certain extenuating circumstances. Any exemption made must be approved by the Promise Program Coordinators. For more information, please email Promise@sjcd.edu  
• Although students may attend SJC the summer after high school graduation, the Promise scholarship may not be used to pay tuition that semester.  The Promise scholarship may be used to pay tuition for subsequent summer semesters.
• Students may enroll in any college credit program or Continuing Education programs that result in a recognized credential. This could include aerospace, IT, healthcare, maritime, truck driving or industrial trades with a maximum scholarship of $4,680.
• Students may continue their studies to earn a related associate degree after completing a workforce training or certificate program.
• Students may use Promise dollars toward college preparatory courses.

• Students may not receive a refund of any unspent Promise dollars.
• The scholarship will pay an amount equivalent to a student’s in-district residency charges.  Students will be responsible for any additional tuition charges due to out of district or out of state or International/out of country residency.
• The scholarship opportunity ends the summer semester of the third year of enrollment, or the student earns an Associate Degree or students meets the max credit limit of 72 college credit hours.
• The college will pay for required college preparatory hours for a maximum of 2 attempts per course. College preparatory courses will not count against the 72 total hours.
• The college will not pay for any three-peat charges.
• Students are eligible to receive the scholarship for all semesters and parts of term so long as the student maintains eligibility.
• The scholarship will cover the cost of books at $50.00 per credit hour up to a max of $600.00. Books can be either Open Books Plus or hard copy. Hard copy books are paid for through a bookstore stipend/credit.
• The scholarship also covers required course materials and supplies, and/or uniforms up to the total book and supply maximum of $600.00.
• Once students complete a certificate of technology, they may pursue the related AAS degree but may not complete a second certificate of technology.
• Continuing education programs that result in a recognized credential are covered. This could include aerospace, IT, healthcare, maritime, truck driving or industrial trades with a maximum scholarship of $4,680.
• Students who pursue a non-credit workforce program may be eligible to transition to a related credit credential.

Current Scholars

• Students must be continuously enrolled each Fall and Spring for 12 credit hours; Summer is optional.
  • If taking summer classes, student must enroll in at least 6 credit hours.
• Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA each semester beginning their 2nd semester.
• Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) as determined by Financial Aid at the end of each semester to maintain the scholarship.  This generally means maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 and passing a minimum of 75 percent of all hours attempted.
• Continued eligibility will be confirmed at the end of each semester of enrollment. Students will be notified by email if they are no longer eligible to receive the scholarship.
• Students must check-in with their advisor or success coach, at minimum, once per semester. To schedule an appointment, connect with us.
• Students must apply for Financial Aid by June 28, 2024 to continue eligibility and, if required, must complete the verification process.
• After the first semester of enrollment, students must register for the Spring by December 8th and Fall by June 28th.
  

An appeal process is available to address concerns missing any of the following deadlines:

• February 22, 2024 – Complete the Promise Pledge and Apply to San Jacinto College.
• July 18, 2024 - Complete and submit a FAFSA or TASFA.
• July 18, 2024 – Complete all enrollment steps (including any financial aid verification) and register for classes.
