The San Jacinto College North Campus Gallery presents “How to Say I Love You in 200 Words or Less,” a solo exhibition by art professor Joe Clark that explores the struggle to express life’s most profound experiences.
The exhibition runs Thursday, Oct. 30, through Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Grant Fine Arts Center on the North Campus. An opening reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Clark, who has been with the college since 2002, delves into themes of time, death, love, learning, and creation through mixed-media assemblages he’s built over many years.
“Parts of this collection waited years to be used,” Clark said in his artist statement. He describes his process as one where visual elements evolve into a vocabulary representing abstract ideas, with narratives emerging from combinations of premade materials.
"I don’t always believe my use of objects as metaphors has helped to make these complex concepts more understandable. In fact, I fear the opposite might have happened and the more I try to speak an allegorical language, the further I get from the truth,” he said. "There’s probably a simpler way to explain, and it’s probably too much to ask of a drawing, painting, or sculpture to do the heavy lifting."
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
