The San Jacinto College Central Department of Theatre and Film presents the dramatic production of “W;t” from Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 18-21, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2:30 p.m.
“W;t,” written by Margaret Edson, won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1999 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.
The two-act drama is a striking and sharply funny reflection on the frailty of existence and the complex relationship between knowledge and love. The story centers on Vivian Bearing, a celebrated but exacting professor of metaphysical poetry who has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. As she submits to experimental treatment, Vivian approaches her illness with the same uncompromising rigor she brings to the sonnets of John Donne. Through it all, she reassesses her life and work with profundity and wry humor.
“Father time is undefeated. This play is just one person’s journey — a journey that our play’s hero felt compelled to share with us,” said Richard Turner, San Jacinto College theatre professor and director. “As we bring the playwright’s story to life, we can wonder what kind of impact we as artists and individuals have had in the world. Who will miss us? Who will keep our memory and spirit alive? What kind of journey have we had? Did we have happiness in our life? Has our life brought happiness to others?”
