Respiratory Care Admission Information
If you are interested in joining the Respiratory Care Program, there are a couple of things you should know. First, admission into the program is competitive with only 25 positions available each Fall and Spring. Second, we do consider your coursework and GPA when you apply. The Scoop on Information Sessions
Information Session Details
- Information sessions are held over Zoom or In-Person depending on the day you select
to attend.
- In-Person sessions are held at the following location: San Jacinto College-Central Campus, 8060 Spencer Hwy., Pasadena, TX 77505 (Building 11, Room 2062)
- You are required to pre-register for a session prior to joining a meeting.
- After registering for a session, an email will be sent with the meeting details (link and passcode).
- All information sessions are recorded and tracked for attendance purposes.
- Pre-registration for the session will not substitute for attendance.
Mandatory Attendance and Application Requirements
- All students who apply to the program must attend one of the sessions prior to applying.
- Applicants who have not attended the mandatory information session will not be considered for the program.

Enroll at San Jac
If you are not a current San Jac student, please submit an application for admission to San Jac before applying to our program. If you are a former San Jac student and more than one year has passed since attending, please renew your application online.

Submit Official Transcripts
Submit all official transcripts to the San Jacinto College Enrollment Services Office and request that they be evaluated. The program will not consider transcripts that were not evaluated by enrollment services. Make sure to attach a copy of the transcript to your online application, even if you are currently enrolled at San Jac. If you are currently attending San Jac, you may get transcripts through My San Jac and save them as a PDF.

Complete Prerequisite Courses
Applicants must complete 11 semester hours as specified below with at least a C average in the courses. Here are the prerequisite courses that must be completed:
- MATH 1314, MATH 1332, MATH 1342 or a higher level math
- BIOL 2301 and 2101 – Anatomy and Physiology I
- BIOL 2302 and 2101 – Anatomy and Physiology II
- RSPT 1101 – Introduction to Respiratory Care
You must earn an overall GPA of 2.0 or better for all college-level courses and an overall San Jac GPA of 2.0 or better if you have taken courses at San Jac. To keep track of your GPA and application points, please print and fill out our scoring rubric.

Application Deadline
Submit your application by the deadline: 5 P.M., June 8, 2024 for the Fall 2024 period.

Notification of Acceptance or Rejection
Applicants will receive notification by email regarding acceptance or rejection by June 17, 2024, by 5 P.M. for the Fall 2024 start. Applicants who are accepted for admission but did not enroll at San Jac must reapply to be considered for admission later.

Get to Know Our Program
The philosophy of the Department of Respiratory Care adheres to the philosophy of the San Jacinto Community College District. Respiratory Care is the allied health discipline that provides care through the use of diagnostic testing to patients with abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary systems. Respiratory therapists practice their specialty under the direction of licensed physicians and perform their duties in various settings, including intensive care units, neonatal/pediatric special care units, general hospital wards, emergency/trauma units, extended care facilities and the home. Due to the nature of the services provided, respiratory therapists must be able to apply knowledge gained through academic education to clinical problems and rational care for the patient. Graduates of the Respiratory Care program are prepared as contributing members of the healthcare team.
Upon completion of the program offered by the Department of Respiratory Care, the student should be able to:
- Utilize patient care processes and scientific principles to provide respiratory care to patients in health care facilities.
- Participate as a contributing member of the health care team.
- Assume personal responsibility for continued learning to maintain professional competency and promote the advancement of respiratory therapy.
- Complete the credentialing examinations administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
Respiratory Care students must earn a grade of C or better in all Respiratory Care (RSPT), science, and mathematics courses. To graduate from the program, you must maintain an overall grade point average of 2.0.
If you earn a grade of D, W, or F in a Respiratory Care course, you will be required to repeat the unsatisfactory grade and pass that course with a grade of C or better to progress in the program. A second grade of D, W, or F in a Respiratory Care course will result in you being dismissed. To be considered for re-entry into the program, you must submit a written petition to the Respiratory Care Admission Committee and, if allowed re-entry, must satisfy the readmission criteria specified by the Committee.
All students should take the required academic foundation courses in sequence along with professional coursework.
Upon completion, you are eligible for admission to the credentialing examinations for respiratory therapy offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (CRT and RRT). You may also apply for a Respiratory Care Practitioner License from the Texas Medical Board.
