A work-based learning experience is structured learning that occurs outside traditional
classroom and lab environments. Work-based learning experiences enhance lecture and
laboratory instruction with hands-on training that helps students learn and apply concepts and theories in a workplace setting.
It may be paid (excluding clinicals) or unpaid and is provided at work sites appropriate
to the discipline. Examples of work-based learning experience's include:
Internships
One-semester work assignment (16-week format or less)
Full or part-time
Paid or unpaid experience
Closely supervised experiences with instruction in theory
Students learn and apply program theory and management of the workflow
Any career field other than healthcare
Clinicals
One-semester work assignment (16-week format or less)
Full or part-time
Paid or unpaid experience
Paid clinicals are not allowed if they are expressly prohibited by a governing, licensing, or certification
body. Reach out to the program or clinical coordinator for more information.
Closely supervised experiences with instruction in theory
Students learn and apply program theory and management of the workflow
Any program in the healthcare career field
Practicums
One-semester work assignment (16-week format or less)
Full- or part-time
Paid or unpaid experience
Less closely supervised, apply previously learned theory, work more independently
preparing for career entry
Students gain practical experience in a discipline, enhance skills, and integrate
knowledge
Any career field
Cooperative Education
Can be multiple semester work assignments
Courses must include one hour per week of lecture (1 semester credit hour), in addition
to the total weekly external work hours.
Usually full-time
Paid experience
Less closely supervised, apply previously learned theory, work in the discipline more
independently
Students gain practical experience in a discipline, enhance skills, and integrate
knowledge
Any career field other than healthcare
