Veterans Day 2020

San Jacinto College invited students, faculty, staff, and community members to virtually celebrate Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with a Facebook Live broadcast hosted by the College's veteran centers staff.

Viewers watched student Kiley Phillips sing the national anthem and a presentation of the colors performed by the Clear Lake High School JROTC. Photo tributes to veterans from faculty and staff were also presented along with video tributes from Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer and other San Jacinto College administrators.

Veteran center staff also highlighted famous veterans, including Johnny Cash, Jackie Robinson, David Robinson, Pedro Augusto del Valle, and Neil Armstrong. Viewers also engaged in Veterans Day trivia with winners receiving gift cards from the campus veteran centers.

The presentation closed with veteran tribute certificates that were submitted from students, faculty, staff, and community members. These will also be displayed online in the College's Facebook group: facebook.com/groups/sanjacveterans.

The San Jacinto College Foundation also named eight veteran students with scholarships. This year's recipients are:

  • Central Campus: Andy Nguyen and Tamisha Javier
  • Maritime Campus: James Adams and Antonio Banuelos
  • North Campus: Henry Lopez and Robert Spence
  • South Campus: Melvin Lewis and Gerardo Torres

Veteran student scholarships are primarily funded by proceeds from the Foundation's Wall of Honor program, which allows families to purchase veteran name plaques for their selected campus Wall of Honor featuring the honored veteran's name, rank, and service branch.
