Application period:
March 15 - June 1

How to Apply

After you’ve been admitted to San Jac, follow these steps to prepare for your program. By the way, if you haven't applied to San Jac, you'll need to do that first.

Students are admitted annually into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Due to limited clinical internship availability, students are admitted on a competitive basis.

If you have any questions or just want to talk to someone about the program, please reach out to us.
  1. Attend an Information Session

We're excited to have you join us. All new applicants are required to attend a Diagnostic Medical Sonography information session for the current application period. Our friendly faculty and staff will walk you through the application process. This is a great time to get your questions answered and take the first step toward your future in sonography.

  2. Gather Official Transcripts

Request official transcripts from all institutions you've previously attended, including San Jac, to submit with your application. Applicants will need to request official transcripts be sent to themselves, then scanned/saved as a PDF for upload. Unofficial transcripts printed from college websites will not be accepted.

You'll also need to have official transcripts from other colleges attended sent to the San Jac Admissions Office.

  3. Process Degree Evaluation

Next, head over to the Secure Online System (SOS) to process and print your degree evaluation for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program AAS degree. Be sure to select the catalog year that matches the year you're applying for. Once completed, include the printed evaluation with your application.

  4. Gather any National Certifications

If you have any national or state recognized certifications in a healthcare field, gather those and submit them with your program application.

  5. Complete Your Prereqs

Before you can apply to the sonography program, you’ll need to earn a grade of 'C' or higher in all prerequisite courses which includes:

    • Math 1314 College Algebra
    • BIOL 2301 and BIOL 2101 Anatomy and Physiology I Lecture and Lab
    • SCIT 1420 Physics for Allied Health
    • DMSO 1110 Introduction to Sonography
Once you're enrolled, you’ll also complete general education courses in humanities or fine arts, as well as PSYC 2301. These are important parts of your degree plan and help round out your education.

  6. Complete the HESI A2 Exam

All Sonography students are required to take the HESI A2 exam—a timed, computerized test that takes about 4.5 hours and helps assess your readiness for the program. Be sure to review the HESI A2 exam instruction packet so you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare.

  7. Apply to the Sonography Program

When you’ve completed the above steps you’re ready to apply to the sonography program! Check out the handy application checklist. You’ll be notified within two to three weeks after the application deadline.

We evaluate applications using our admission scoring rubric.

    Applications accepted March 15 - June 1.

DMS Program Effectiveness Data

All sonography students receive hands-on training at clinical sites around the Houston area. Check out the program information and clinical obligations to learn more about being a student in the sonography program.

Clinical Obligations

Coursework from another diagnostic sonography program will be evaluated on an individual basis by the program director, department chair and the admission appeals committee. A grade of C or higher is required in all transferred prerequisite, general education and program-specific courses from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Program-specific courses must have been completed with a grade of C or higher from a CAAHEP-accredited sonography program.

Transfer students are required to obtain a letter from the current program director verifying good academic and ethical standing. Transfer from another program will require successful completion of a one-time entrance didactic and skills competency exam based on the program progression level. Nonenrollment in a sonography program cannot exceed two semesters.

Transfer students need to meet all criteria required of San Jacinto College diagnostic medical sonography program students and complete at least 50% of the program at San Jacinto College. Transfer students from another program will be admitted on a space-available basis.
