State of the College celebrates past, present, and future
PASADENA, Texas — On Friday, Nov. 12, Dr. Brenda Hellyer, San Jacinto College Chancellor, delivered the State of the College to elected officials, Board of Trustees, community members, and faculty and staff both virtually and in person. The presentation addressed the journey that led San Jac to where it is today and the roadmap created for the College's future.

- Dispersing $32 million to students from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, allowing students to continue their education goals despite any hardships from COVID-19
- Distributing 312,000 pounds of food items through the food market to students, faculty, and staff during the pandemic
- Erasing $2 million in student debt so students could continue with their coursework despite the hardships of COVID-19
- Hosting grand openings for five new buildings as a part of the 2015 bond project, including San Jac's newest campus, Generation Park Campus
- Opening the EDGE Center at the hub of the Houston Spaceport
- Founding the 21Forward Scholarship as a part of the $30 million MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett donation
- Designating the Maritime Technology and Training Center as a Center of Excellence for domestic maritime workforce training and education by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration
Projects that the Chancellor mentioned in the near future include ...
- Expanding the Promise @ San Jac Scholarship to all in-district high school seniors by establishing an endowment with funds from the Scott and Jewett donation
- Opening the classroom building on Central Campus in 2022, the largest academic building in the United States to be constructed from mass timber
- Continuing the work on Generation Park to expand the campus offerings
The address ended with the Chancellor thanking supporters for their assistance in making the educational goals a reality for students at San Jacinto College.
"We have made and will continue to make an impact in our community, and we couldn't do it without the support of each of you, the support of each of our taxpayers, and our community at large," Hellyer said.
