Six student-athletes earn NJCAA all-academic recognition

PASADENA, Texas — Six San Jacinto College student-athletes were recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association for their academic success during the 2018-2019 season.

"Year in and year out, NJCAA student-athletes continue to set a new standard both on the field and in the classroom," stated NJCAA President and CEO Dr. Christopher Parker. "The 2018-2019 academic year was no different as student-athletes raised the bar once again to reiterate the importance of academics throughout the NJCAA. As an association, we take tremendous pride in knowing that our student-athletes put their best foot forward each day to become well-rounded members of their team, their campus, and their communities."

The six San Jac student-athletes who received NJCAA all-academic recognition are:

Ashley Tran, softball, first team

Adam Houghtaling, baseball, second team

Lillie Grotenhuis, softball, second team

Ashley Ramber, softball, third team

Dominique Garcia, softball, third team

Madelyn Daniel, softball, third team

"We are extremely proud of these players, as we are all of our student-athletes," said Dr. Allatia Harris, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives. "We take pride in our competitive athletics teams and our rigorous academics. Our student-athletes work hard on and off the field, and they are deserving of this recognition."

A new NJCAA record was set this year with 6,656 student-athletes from around the country earning a spot on one of the three NJCAA All-Academic teams. This year's record eclipsed the previous mark of 6,329 in the 2017-2018 academic year. To be eligible, student-athletes achieve an overall GPA of 3.60 or higher. The criteria for the three All-Academic teams are:

• NJCAA All-Academic First Team: 4.00 GPA
• NJCAA All-Academic Second Team: 3.80-3.99 GPA
• NJCAA All-Academic Third Team: 3.60-3.79 GPA
